I started going through some boxes to put in the attic and I looked through my old trophy box and one caught my attention. It brought back an interesting memory. I was 5 years old playing indoor soccer, for the little devils in Sydney. This game was taken pretty seriously, more so by the parents like most kids sports. It was a close game and we ended up winning. Another parent from the losing team didn’t take it well, and he started beating up the parents on our winning team. He hurt a lot of people during his rampage. My dad was the coach of our team, seen what was happening, wrestled him to the ground and put him in a headlock. Other parents started to assist restraining him. Then the man sunk his teeth into the side of my dads stomach, and took a chunk out. My team and I went to Macdonald’s to celebrate while my dad went to the hospital to get stitches and a Tetanus shot. This was 34 years ago, parents being passionate is one thing, but physical and mental abuse is unacceptable and is still very common in all sports today. Especially towards referees and umpires of kids sports, who are normally kids themselves. Never let your emotions overpower your intelligence. A moment of patience in a moment of anger saves a thousand moments of regret.
